Since taking office in January 2007, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has moved to tackle some of the world’s toughest problems, including global climate change, stopping the genocide in Darfur, and supporting Iraq. He has pledged to strengthen the three pillars of the UN -- security, development, and human rights -- and to streamline the UN’s operations.
Climate Change
Climate change is one of the most significant global challenges, and Secretary-General Ban has made addressing this issue a priority for the UN. Thanks to his persistence, the UN brought together 187 countries in Bali, Indonesia in December 2007, where they agreed to negotiate a new framework to address the threats of climate change. Darfur
Secretary-General Ban has given his highest attention to the ongoing crisis in Darfur, and he continues to push for full deployment of the 26,000-strong peacekeeping mission that the UN successfully negotiated. Iraq
Secretary-General Ban has called Iraq “the problem of the whole world,” and has solicited commitments of over $30 billion in international financial aid for the country. He has worked to enhance the UN’s role in promoting Iraq’s national reconciliation, regional dialogue, humanitarian assistance, and human rights. Learn More
Millennium Development Goals
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the UN’s blueprint for meeting the needs of the world’s poorest. Secretary-General Ban personally experienced the UN’s development work, as the UN helped his native South Korea grow from a war-torn economy into the 11th-largest in the world. Secretary-General Ban is pushing leaders to ensure that the MDGs are a priority for every country—both donors and developing nations. Learn More
Non-Proliferation
Secretary-General Ban has actively worked to combat the spread of Weapons of Mass Destruction. He has created a new Office of Disarmament Affairs, which is located within the Secretariat, to ensure high-level, sustained attention to disarmament issues. Learn More
UN Reform Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made reform an immediate priority, pledging to strengthen the UN to face its many challenges through increased transparency and accountability, and streamlined human resources. He led an effort to extend the UN Secretariat’s Ethics policy to all UN Funds and Programs, as well as to mandate that UN Funds and Programs establish their own ethics offices, or else come under the Secretariat’s Ethics Office.
