Statement by Peter Yeo, Executive Director of the Better World Campaign
Washington, DC (September 23, 2009) — Better World Campaign Executive Director Peter Yeo issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s address before the United Nations General Assembly today in New York City:
“President Obama’s speech to the United Nations today shows a renewed commitment to the UN and a real shift in how the United States engages with this critically important global body. In his first address to the General Assembly, the President recognized that the UN is a vital institution for US foreign policy.
“The President outlined how America would lead in addressing common challenges, but was also clear in stating that all countries must step up and work together to do the same. From nonproliferation to global warming, no nation can do it alone, and the UN is the only universal institution that can bring the world together.
“After paying its long overdue bills to the UN, joining the Human Rights Council, and demonstrating real engagement with all member states, the US is now in a better position to make the UN stronger and more effective and advance American interests.”
