UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock to be Featured on Capitol Hill

Washington – (MEDIA ADVISORY, June 13, 2012) Herbie Hancock—UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and Grammy Award-winning, international jazz icon—will be featured on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. The reception will include a performance by Mr. Hancock. Representatives Fred Upton (R-MI) and John Conyers (D-MI) are honorary cohosts of the event. The event is cosponsored by L’Oréal USA and National Geographic.

As a Goodwill Ambassador, Hancock has been working to advance the ideals of The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which was created to “build peace in the minds of men.” The Better World Campaign will recognize Hancock for his dedication to harnessing the power of music to promote peace and intercultural dialogue.

UNESCO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, helps advance a number of core American foreign policy and national security interests—providing literacy training to police officers in Afghanistan; civic education to Iraqi youth to counter the influence of extremist organizations; tsunami warning systems in the Pacific; and Holocaust education around the world. UNESCO works to promote global peace and security, innovation, and intercultural dialogue through an array of programs in five major areas: education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information.
