Celebrating International Day of Peace

Over the past few months, we asked you to thank United Nations Peacekeepers for their work to improve lives through 15 missions around the world. American support of UN Peacekeeping helps our own economic and national security interests, but more than that, it demonstrates American leadership and determination towards a stronger, more stable world.

In 2010, UN Peacekeepers have worked towards peace in conflict zones in all corners of the globe, from Darfur to Lebanon to East Timor. When disaster struck earlier this year, UN Peackeepers were already on the ground in Haiti to support government assistance to survivors. Through the United Nations and its unique global platform, we are able to enhance our national and global security, prevent the collapse of weak states, and promote American values of democracy and human rights.

We now have more than 13,000 signatures and personal messages of thanks to deliver to UN Peacekeepers. In October, we will deliver these messages of thanks to the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations -- so stay tuned for more. Your messages of thanks demonstrate that Americans know the important work and sacrifices of UN Peacekeepers who put themselves in harm's way each day.
