Stand Up for LGBT Rights with Secretary Clinton at the United Nations

LGBT_petition_clintonThe fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights does not stop in the United States; dozens of countries have horrific human rights violations based on their treatment of LGBT individuals. The U.S. has made it clear support for LGBT rights doesn’t end at our borders. Working through the United Nations, the U.S. understands that the UN has the capacity to make a more equal and just world regardless of sexual orientation.

In December 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a historic speech in front of the United Nations declaring it a “violation of human rights” to commit violence or discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation. Send a letter to Secretary Clinton thanking her for her strong leadership and tell her to continue fighting for LGBT individuals.

This worldwide fight for human rights is just getting started.  The UN has made significant developments in its response to LGBT human rights violations in the past year. Many of these initiatives have been the direct result of strong leadership from Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon who has taken a strong, supportive stance on the issue. Some member countries that are more conservative have shown their distaste for the conversation by walking out of Human Rights Council meetings when the topic has been brought up.

We need Hillary Clinton to continue being a strong force and to continue engaging the UN on the topic. Show your support for LGBT rights around the world by signing this petition, thanking Secretary Hillary Clinton for her leadership and encourage her to continue talking about LGBT rights at the UN and on the world stage.

Dear Secretary Hillary Clinton,

Thank you for using your voice and leadership at the United Nations to bring light to the horrific human rights violations based on the treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals. Your stance on the issue has been both honorable and courageous. In particular, your speech late last year on the issue of LGBT rights in front of the UN general assembly was inspiring, and I hope you continue to push this issue more on the world stage.

I would like to encourage you to continue fighting for LGBT rights. Now is the time to stand up against other governments that have cruel and inhumane laws against those who act upon their sexual orientation.

Your commitment to work through the UN in establishing norms and recognizing LGBT rights will foster an open dialogue on the issue and encourage nations to stop their human rights violations.

Please help make this a top priority at the United Nations

Sincerely,

Name
